Almost every bean-to-cup machine is an espresso machine that also makes a long black by adding water. This one is not. It has three separate brewing methods: high pressure with pre-infusion for espresso, a lower-pressure brew that lets the grounds bloom for genuine drip coffee, and cold extraction for cold brew in under three minutes. Two things to be clear about. This is a fully automatic machine, so there is no portafilter and no tamping and the milk is textured for you. Living with it

Day to day, say yes when it offers the milk clean after a milk drink, and empty the grounds container and drip tray. Both carafes lift off and go in the fridge between uses, and both are dishwasher safe.

Then periodically, the screen tells you when a descale is due and walks you through it, and the brewing components come out to be rinsed. Fit the carbon filter and run the water hardness strip on day one, because that is what sets the descaling interval.

FAQs

• Does it really make drip coffee, or just a long espresso?
  Really. Drip coffee has its own brewing process here, at lower pressure and for longer, so the grounds bloom the way they do in a filter brewer. That is a different extraction from an espresso stretched with hot water, and it tastes like it. If your household is split between espresso and filter, this is the reason to look at this machine.
• Is the cold brew genuine cold brew?
  It is genuinely cold extracted rather than brewed hot and chilled. Cold Extraction Technology pulls the coffee cold in under three minutes, so it comes out smooth and sweet rather than bitter. It is not an overnight steep, but it is not hot coffee poured over ice either.
• Do I get cold foam as well as hot?
  Yes, and both carafes are in the box. LatteCrema Hot makes the dense warm foam a cappuccino needs; LatteCrema Cool makes cold foam at the right temperature for iced drinks. A hot system cannot do the cold job properly, which is why there are two.
• How many people can save their settings?
  Three profiles, each holding drink size, intensity and temperature. There are five sizes, four intensity levels and three temperatures to work with, so most households find their settings in the first week and stop touching the menus.
• Do I need to know anything about espresso?
  No. It grinds, doses, brews and textures the milk on its own, so there is no portafilter and no tamping. You pick the drink on the screen.
• Does it work with oat or almond milk?
