The De'Longhi Rivelia has two removable bean hoppers, so you can keep two coffees loaded at once and switch between them in seconds. Over 18 one-touch drinks, hot and cold, on a 3.5 inch colour touchscreen with four profiles.

Every other bean-to-cup machine makes you pick one coffee and live with it until the hopper is empty. The Rivelia does not. Twist one hopper off, drop the other on, and the machine re-reads what it is grinding: a dark roast for the morning, a lighter one in the afternoon, decaf after dinner, without tipping beans into a jar or running the grinder empty. Bean Adapt then adjusts the grind, the dose and the temperature to whatever you have loaded, which is the part that usually takes a week of fiddling.

Two things to be clear about. Cold milk foam is not included. The machine comes with the LatteCrema Hot carafe, which handles every hot milk drink, and the cold foam carafe is a separate accessory you add if you want iced lattes with a proper cold foam head. The cold coffee, cold espresso and cold americano all work out of the box. And this is a fully automatic machine, so no portafilter and no tamping. Living with it

Day to day, say yes when it offers the milk clean after a milk drink, and empty the grounds container and drip tray. The LatteCrema carafe lifts off and goes in the fridge between uses, so the milk does not sit out.

Then periodically, the touchscreen tells you when a descale is due and walks you through it, and the brewing components come out to be rinsed. Fit the water filter and set your water hardness on day one, because that is what sets the descaling interval.

• What do the two bean hoppers actually get me?
  Two coffees loaded at the same time and a switch between them that takes seconds. Most machines make you empty the hopper and purge the grinder to change beans, so in practice nobody bothers. Here you keep decaf on the machine, or a dark roast and a light one, and pick per drink.
• Does it make cold coffee properly, or is it hot coffee over ice?
  Properly. Cold Extraction Technology brews at low temperature under controlled pressure, so cold coffee, cold espresso and cold americano come out cold rather than being poured hot over ice and diluted. It takes a few minutes rather than an overnight steep.
• Can I make an iced latte with cold foam?
  Not out of the box. The machine ships with the hot milk carafe, and cold foam needs the separate cold milk accessory. Everything else on the cold menu works without it. Ask us and we will tell you what is involved.
• Do I need to adjust the grinder when I change beans?
  No. Bean Adapt reads what you have loaded and sets the grind, dose and temperature for it. That is the difference between changing beans being a decision and being a chore.
• Can it remember how different people take their coffee?
  Yes, four profiles. The screen learns which drinks each person makes most and lists those first, so the usual order is one tap away.
• Do I have to know anything about espresso?
  No. It grinds, doses, brews and textures the milk on its own. There is no portafilter and no tamping, and there is a pre-ground option if you want to use a coffee you already have.
• What is the warranty, and who services it in Canada?
