Living with it

After each session, purge and wipe the steam wand and knock out the puck. Milk left in a wand is the fastest way to ruin one, and thirty seconds now saves a service call later.

Then periodically, the machine tells you when it wants a cleaning cycle and when it needs descaling, and the cleaning tablets and descaling powder for the first rounds are in the box. If your water is hard, descaling comes around sooner. The lights on the front panel are how the machine talks to you, so keep the manual handy for the first few weeks.

FAQs

• Does it come with a grinder?
  No. The Bambino Plus is the espresso machine only, and it needs freshly ground coffee to perform. Budget for a separate burr grinder, or come to the showroom and we will help you work out what pairing suits how you drink.
• What size portafilter does it take?
  54 mm, which is Breville's standard size, with a dose of about 18 grams in the double basket. Tampers and accessories need to be 54 mm rather than the 58 mm size used by commercial machines.
• Do I have to know how to steam milk?
  No. Set the texture and temperature, put the jug in place, and the automatic wand stops on its own. When you want to learn, the same wand switches to manual so you can texture milk yourself.
• What is the difference between the two basket types?
  Dual wall baskets are forgiving: they build pressure for you, so supermarket or slightly stale coffee still produces crema. Single wall baskets give you real control and reward a good grinder and a fresh grind. Both are in the box, so start with dual wall and move over when ready.
• How do I clean and descale it?
  Purge and wipe the steam wand after every use and knock the puck out. Beyond that the machine prompts a cleaning cycle and a descale when they are due, and the tablets and descaling powder to do both are included.
